Blackjack for Beginners (and Beyond)
You might know the game as Pontoon or 21, but in UK casinos, it’s officially called Blackjack. It’s one of the most popular and fast-paced card games in the world — simple to learn, yet full of strategy for those who like a challenge.
If you’re new to the table, take a moment to observe a few rounds first. Watching others play helps you understand the flow, dealer actions, and how bets are placed before you join in.

Objective of the Game
The aim of blackjack is straightforward: beat the dealer by getting a hand value closer to 21 than theirs, without going over.
Each card has a set value:
- Face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) = 10
- Number cards = their face value
- Aces = 1 or 11 (whichever benefits your hand most)
If your first two cards total 21, that’s an Ace and a 10-value card you’ve hit Blackjack, the best possible hand and an automatic winner (unless the dealer also has Blackjack, in which case it’s a draw).
Basic Blackjack Rules in UK Casinos
After you place your initial bet, the dealer gives each player two cards and deals two for themselves — one face up and one face down.
If you don’t have Blackjack straight away, you’ll need to decide your next move. Here are your main options:
HIT
Ask the dealer for another card to increase your total. You can hit as many times as you like until you’re satisfied, but if your hand exceeds 21, you go bust and lose your bet.
STAND
Stay with your current hand and let the dealer reveal theirs. This is usually the best move when you’re close to 21 or think the dealer might bust.
SPLIT
If your first two cards are a pair (e.g. two 8s or two Aces), you can split them into two separate hands by placing a second bet equal to your original. Each new hand then receives another card and plays out individually. (Most casinos advise against splitting 4s, 5s or 10s.)
DOUBLE DOWN
When your first two cards total 9, 10 or 11, you can double down, double your original bet and receive one final card. It’s a bold move, often used when you feel confident about your odds.
Dealer Rules and Game Outcomes
After all players finish their hands, the dealer reveals their hidden card and must continue drawing cards until reaching at least 17.
- If the dealer goes over 21, they bust and any remaining players automatically win.
- If your total beats the dealer’s, you win your bet (usually paid 1:1).
- If both hands are equal, it’s a push, and your bet is returned.
- If the dealer has Blackjack, all player bets lose except for any other Blackjack hands, which result in a tie.
Final Tips for New Players
- Always assume the dealer’s hidden card is worth 10, it helps guide your decisions.
- Avoid chasing losses; stick to a betting limit and play responsibly.
- Learn basic blackjack strategy charts to improve your odds.
- Above all, enjoy the game, blackjack is about both luck and smart decision-making.
